Aims of the Department
Our vision in the music department at Bishop Rawstorne is that all our pupils are engaged and motivated by the subject. Pupils should enjoy participating in practical music activities and each individual’s creativeness should be fully stretched and challenged, through a range of topics and units. Pupils will be supported to achieve high levels of progress in their learning as young musicians in a safe, caring and enthusiastic environment.
As a department we offer an array of extracurricular activities. There are so many ways in which to get involved with music at Bishop Rawstorne, just click on the link below to see what’s going on.
Instrumental lessons are taught by a team of professional staff and are offered on a wide range of instruments, including:
Voice, Keyboard and Piano – Mrs. J. Swift
Drums – Mr. J. Molyneux
Guitar – Mr. J. Doyle
Woodwind – Mr. H. Michalas
Brass – Miss. K. Curlett
Each year we have Christmas and Summer Concerts, which feature the band and choir as well as smaller ensembles and soloists. Standards are always exceptionally high and are another indication of the wealth of talent we have. 2013 saw the first winners of the ‘Band Person of the Year’ and ‘Choir Person of the Year’, both picked by the members of the respective ensemble and awarded at the summer concert, where we also say farewell and thank you to our year 11’s. Please follow the link below to see the past and present winners. As well as the main concerts there are various opportunities to perform throughout the year whether it be externally or at school events such as awards evening and the ladies governors lunch. We also have a worship band who perform and lead singing in year group worship on a regular basis. Pupils can also perform in a more informal setting during our performances in the foyer around Christmas and the end of term at lunchtime.

These awards are voted by the members of the ensembles and are given as a recognition by the members of all the time and effort they have dedicated to the ensemble throughout the year.
