Bishop Rawstorne Church of England Academy

Year 9 Options

Year 9 Options

The school believes it is vital that curriculum provision at Key Stage 4 is varied and flexible in order to meet the needs of individual students. As a result, all students are grouped into one of two ‘Pathways’ when making their options choices for Key Stage 4. The composition of these groups is based on their attainment at Key Stage 3 across all subject areas. This ensures that each student is following an appropriate quantity and range of subjects in Year 10 and 11.

Blue Pathway

For these students, English*, Mathematics, Science**, a Humanity (Geography or History), a Modern Foreign Language and Religious Studies are compulsory.  In addition to this, all students are able to choose two additional enrichment options.  This will lead to a maximum of 10 GCSE awards. Core PE and PSHE/Citizenship will also be studied.

Yellow Pathway

For these students, English*, Mathematics, Science**, a Humanity (Geography or History) and Religious Studies are compulsory. In addition to this, all students are able to choose two additional enrichment options. This will lead to a maximum of 9 GCSE awards. Core PE and PSHE/Citizenship will also be studied.

Students following the Yellow Pathway will not study a Modern Foreign Language. This reduces the number of examinations students will be required to sit and creates additional curriculum time to focus on other areas, including English and Maths. However, all students at Bishop Rawstorne are entitled to study a Modern Foreign Language if they so wish. This would involve moving on to the Blue Pathway. Should you wish to discuss this option for your child, please contact Mr Marsden at school.

* All students will study towards both English Language and English Literature GCSE.

** Most students will study a Science course leading to the possibility of 2 Science GCSEs at the end of the course. For the most able students in Science, a triple Science route is available as an enrichment option choice.  This will result in separate GCSE qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
