The English Faculty at Bishop Rawstorne comprises a dynamic team of professionals who are passionate about both language and literature and are all subject specialists. English lessons follow lively and engaging schemes of work which incorporate essential life skills: speaking and listening, reading and writing as well as a focus on literacy skills. Key ingredients of all English lessons are pace, rigour, and challenge, with students supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

At Key Stage 3, students’ progress is tracked through a series of assessments which focus on reading, writing and spoken language skills, in line with the National Curriculum. The assessments are specifically designed to monitor and improve all-round performance, allowing students to flourish academically by equipping them with the skills needed to achieve the school’s ambitious targets. After each assessment, students are set personalised targets which they can develop before they revisit that particular skill.

At Key Stage 4, all students are entered for GCSE English Language and English Literature, following WJEC/Eduqas exam board specification. This is assessed at the end of Year 11 and is 100% exam.

The English Faculty resides in a suite of seven purpose-built classrooms. We have excellent  facilities and are well resourced with interactive whiteboards, new stock and ICT equipment. Furthermore, we have a vibrant library and dedicated librarian to support and encourage students in their reading. We are proud of the opportunities we offer students to enrich their learning such as theatre trips, workshops with visiting authors and a range of competitions, as well as the variety of extra-curricular and revision sessions running at lunch time and after school. We are a highly successful team of professionals and pride ourselves on the excellent rapport we have with our students.
