After another successful year for the current Year 10 football team, the season finished on Tuesday with the Lancashire Cup Final.
After reaching the final last year and narrowly losing on penalties, the team went one step further and won the cup. On the road to the final, the team came up against some tough opposition and fought hard to beat some excellent schools.
The first round saw them beat Ripley St Thomas 5-0. Next saw the team comprehensively beat unity college Burley 11-0, and they then followed that up with a really tough game against Accrington Academy in the quarter-final which ended 2-2, after Harry Chadwick (goalkeeper saving a last minute penalty). This forced the tie to extra time which was a nervy 20 minutes, and the lads kept their nerve to win the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4. Into the semi-final saw the team travel to Blackburn to play St Bede’s which they beat 5-1.
The final was a close game and after going 1-0 up the opposition missed two penalties before we scored the second goal. However, the team conceded within 5 minutes which lead to a tense finish to the game.
The boys did so well to hold out and had a few chances towards the end to make the game safe. This is a remarkable achievement for all the boys involved in the football squad to become the Champions of Lancashire Schools. Over 50 teams entered the competition and to even make it to the final, let alone win, is fantastic.
They have such a great attitude and team spirit since the team was formed in year 7 and all the hard work has now paid off.
