Our Values and Ethos
As a Church of England Academy, Bishop Rawstorne has Christian worship at the heart of our everyday life. Our Collective Worship is driven by our Christian Distinctiveness, but it runs much deeper than that. We care about human flourishing. Whilst we recognise the diverse backgrounds each member of the Bishop Rawstorne community has, we strive to cultivate an atmosphere in which everyone can experience life in all its fullness (John 10:10).
This is how we live our lives each and every day Bravely and Faithfully.
The Roots (Character education for life):
The Christian Roots are the framework for the ‘character education’ of our daily school life. We apply them inside and outside of lessons. Our extra-curricular work and enrichment activities are all led in ways to help our students grow as mature people in a school community that cultivates Godly values. Examples include reaching for compassion rather than anger. We seek to build community through the value of Fellowship based on the Koinonia of Christ. Further, we all work to foster peace over aggression. We choose to serve rather than be selfish.
"And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." (Ephesian 3:17-19)
Young people today face many challenges both from the society in which they live and the education system that they experience. In our school we promote the presence of authentic Christian values as a narrative for being/behaving that stem from and express the teachings of Christ (James 3:17, Galatians 5:22-23). For this reason, we know it is essential to equip our students with Christian values that serve as deep roots in their lives. We encourage our students through rooting their values within a sound theological framework and with reference to cardinal and theological virtues.
These values take students beyond just caring and sharing. The character that we endeavour to nurture is the root, the support system for the entirety of life. Each of these roots symbolise our core values: Hope, Service, Compassion, Fellowship, Wisdom and Peace.
Our vision of educating with godly wisdom, is rooted in the Church of England’s vision for education ‘Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good’. Educating for life in all its fullness includes:
- Educating for wisdom knowledge and skills.
- Educating for hope and aspiration.
- Educating for community and living well together.
- Educating for dignity and respect.
